How to Choose Shoes For Swing Dancing

If you are looking for swing dance shoes, it is easy to feel lost. Many shoes look beautiful, but not every pair works the same way for dancing. Whether you dance Lindy Hop, Blues, Balboa, Boogie Woogie, Solo Jazz, West Coast, Shag, or Salsa and Tango -  this guide will help you choose your shoes with more confidence.

Good dance shoes should help you turn, balance, and move with less effort. They should also fit your feet well, match the floors you dance on, and support the way you dance.

All of this is especially important to us because we create tailored custom shoes for swing and other dance styles, designed for both standard and non-standard feet, including narrow, wide, and super-wide feet, as well as bunions, high arches, and hallux valgus.

The size and fit are not decided only by the number you choose on the website. The main fitting work happens after you make the order, during the email conversation, when we look at your measurements, foot shape, and needs.

Start with the floor

Dancers know that the right sole can completely change the feeling of the dance.

Leather sole is the most popular choice for indoor swing dancing. It helps with turns, pivots, and smooth movement. Many dancers choose it for Lindy Hop, Balboa, Solo Jazz and Blues shoes when they dance mostly indoors.

Neolite sole gives more grip than leather and less grip than rubber. It is often a good option for beginners, for dancers who want one pair for both dancing and outside walking and for dancers who are looking for vegan shoes.

Rubber sole gives the most grip. We mainly recommend it for street use, though some dancers also choose it for very slippery floors, aerials, jumps, or high-energy movement.

EVA sole is softer and more cushioned. It is not as slippery as leather or neolite, but it is very light and shock absorbing and works well for long practice days and for dancers who want extra comfort. Many dancers choose it for their Boogie-Woogie shoes.

Flexible suede sole can be a useful option, especially when more flexibility through the front is needed.  It allows easier forefoot bending and can support a more pointed, expressive foot line. Its popular through Salsa and Tango Dancers.

A simple rule:

  • if the floor feels sticky, choose a smoother sole

  • if the floor feels slippery, choose more grip

Pick the right heel height for your body

There is no single “best” heel height.

Lower heels up to 3 cm usually feel more stable and easier for long social dancing. Medium heels can be a nice balance between comfort and elegance. Higher, 6 cm heels can work well for dancers who like that posture and feel secure in them. The right choice depends on your body, ankle mobility, foot shape, and personal preference.

It is also important to keep in mind that higher heels usually require more experience and confidence on the dance floor.

Foot shape matters more than size number

A dance shoe should match your foot shape, not only your size.

Some dancers have narrow feet. Some have wide feet, bunions, high arches, or need more toe space. For many people, discomfort comes from the wrong shape, not the wrong size.

This is why Harlem Shoes focuses on custom dance shoes and a personal fitting process. On the website, you choose your approximate size and width only as a starting point — the closest standard option to what you usually wear. It helps us to better understand your preferences before we begin to study your feet.

After the order, we continue to chat with you by email and adapt the fit of the shoes to your feet. That is an important part of our service: each pair is made for the individual dancer, not just chosen only from a standard size chart.

Barefoot dance shoes can be a great option

If your toes often feel squeezed, barefoot dance shoes can be a very good solution. They give more room in the toe area and can feel much better for dancers who do not enjoy traditional narrow shapes.

Some dancers choose them for everyday comfort, some because of foot issues, and some because they simply prefer a more natural shape.

Harlem Shoes are customizable

Another important point: the website shows many different models, colors, and combinations, but these are examples, not limits.

You can choose a design already shown on the site and ask us to repeat it. Or you can create your own version by choosing different colors, materials, heel height, and sole type.

This part is also discussed after the order by email. That way, we can make sure the final pair is right not only for your dancing, but also for your style.
